Actualization of methods determining insecticides susceptibility of fleas Xenopsylla cheopis Rothschild, 1903 (Siphonaptera, Pulicidae)

O.Yu. Eremina, V.V. Olifer

Scientific Research Disinfectology Institute of Federal Service in Supervision of Protection of Rights of Consumers and Prosperity of a Man: 18 Nauchny proezd, Moscow, 117246, Russian Federation.

The susceptibility of the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis to chemical compounds from various chemical classes was determined by the insecticidal indexes of LC50, LC99 (μg a.i./cm2) after 48 hours. The method of group contact with insecticide-impregnated filter paper can be recommended for establishing diagnostic concentrations and detecting the level of insecticide susceptibility of fleas. The article demonstrates a method for determining the level of sensitivity to pyrethroids of fleas on time and the onset of knockdown (complete loss of locomotor activity when exposed to treated surface). When fleas come into contact with pyrethroid-impregnated paper vs. glass, a fairly quick and well reproducible knockdown effect is revealed. Since it is known that the decrease in the sensitivity of the nervous system plays the most important role in the mechanism of pyrethroid resistance of insects, this method can be recommended for an additional characteristic of insecticide susceptibility.

Keywords: rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis, resistance, susceptibility determining method.

Medical significance of house flies and their susceptibility to chlorfenapyr

O.Yu. Eremina, V.V. Olifer

Scientific Research Disinfectology Institute of Federal Service in Supervision of Protection of Rights of Consumers and Prosperity of a Man: 18 Nauchny proezd, Moscow, 117246, Russian Federation.

The current data on the medical significance of houseflies (Musca domestica), which are the mechanical carriers of infectious diseases, such as cholera, shigellosis, salmonellosis and skin infections, are presented. The susceptibility to chlorfenapyr of houseflies of a laboratory susceptible strain S-NIID was studied. Chlorfenapyr is highly effective when applied topically to flies, with the CL50 value is 0.0025 % a.i. The house flies were highly susceptible to chlorfenapyr-based sugar baits. After 24 hours, more than 90 % individuals died at concentration of 0.0003 % a.i. and 100 % individuals at a concentration of 0.003 % a.i. Chlorfenapyr is recommended for inclusion in rotation schemes for control of resistant flies.

Keywords: house flies, Musca domestica, resistance, chlorfenapyr.

2Scientific Research Disinfectology Institute of Federal Service in Supervision of Protection of Rights of Consumers and Prosperity of a Man: 18 Nauchny proezd, Moscow, 117246, Russian Federation.

The article presents the collective opinion of two scientists from Germany and Russia concerning the problem of infections with natural focality transmitted by ixodid ticks. Modern data on the incidence of these infections in different countries are presented; measures of specific and non-specific prevention are briefly described. It is noted that the assessment of the effectiveness of different repellent and acaricidal remedies may vary in certain areas due to the difference in species composition of ixodid ticks.

Keywords: ixodid ticks, tick-borne infections, nonspecific prophylaxis, acaricides, repellents.

This paper analyzes the data of monitoring carried out by zoologists of Sanitary and Epidemiological Service in Kaluga region. We describe the structure of small mammals’ population in riparian communities in Smolensk-Moscow, Middle-Russian, and Dniepr-Desna geographic provinces. Everywhere predominant species are the striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius Pallas, 1771), the common bank vole (Myodes glareolus Shreber, 1780), the common shrew (Sorex araneus Linnaeus, 1758) and the pygmy field mouse (Sylvaemus uralensis Pallas, 1811). The percentage of the water vole Arvicola amphibius (Linnaeus, 1758) decreased after 2004. These species of the small mammals can participate in epizootic process of such dangerous to human zoonotic infections as tularemia, leptospirosis and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Against the background of arable lands colonization by tree vegetation, the monitoring of populations of small mammals become especially significant to medical zoologists of Sanitary and Epidemiological Service.

Keywords: riparian habitats, small mammals, percentage, epizootic investigation, planning, natural focal infectious diseases, Hantaviruses, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, tularemia, leptospirosis, field mouse, bank vole, water vole.
