This work is a logical continuation of the previously published article "Disinfection of postal correspondence as a tool to counteract postal bioterrorism" and is devoted to the study of the electron beam method (ELM) sterilization of postal correspondence (PC). The possibility of using pathogenic biological agents (PBAs) for terrorist purposes using PCs poses the maximum danger among possible threats, since the consequences, if terrorists achieve their goals, will be catastrophic. The rapid development of biological sciences leads to an ever-expanding list of PBAs due to the discovery of pathogens of new infections, the creation of genetically modified and hybrid microorganisms. A special place is occupied by the problem of ensuring the biological safety (BB) of PC recipients, associated with the possibility of committing terrorist acts, including through infected mail. In this regard, it is relevant to search for methods of providing PC security that would reduce the risks of infection of technical personnel of communication offices to a minimum or eliminate them altogether. In order to prevent damage to the PBA of the technical personnel of the PC processing points and the final recipients by mail, their disinfection is justified.
Keywords: postal bioterrorism, biological security, pathogenic biological agent, mail, mail processing point, electron beam method.

Issues of epidemiology of dirofilariasis in Russia and Europe in the XXI century

S.A. Roslavtseva

Disinfectology Institute of the Center of Hygiene named after F.F. Erisman of Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing: 117246, Russian Federation, Moscow, Nauchniy proezd, 18a.

The participation of mosquitoes in the epidemiological process of invasion caused by Dirofilaria spp. – parasites of carnivorous animals and humans is considered. Mosquitoes of the genera Aedes (Stegomyia), Culex, Anopheles, Coquillettidia (Mansonia) participate in the transmission of microfilariae – larvae of helminths. The problem of dirofilariasis is especially acute in cities in the presence of infected dogs, primarily service and stray dogs, and mosquitoes, which contributes to the year-round transmission of the invasion by vector. According to Rospotrebnadzor, since 2016 There is a tendency to increase the incidence of dirofilariasis among the Russian population. The methods of treatment of dirofilariasis are surgical. No dirofilariasis has been detected in mosquitoes infected with the Wolbachia bacterium.
Keywords: morbidity, infection, spread, dirofilariae, mosquitoes, wolbachia, prevention (insecticides, larvicides).

Efficacy of bait based on PfDNV densovirus against synanthropic cockroaches

K.S. Krivonos, O.Yu.Eremina, V.V. Olifer

Disinfectology Institute of the Center of Hygiene named after F.F. Erisman of Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing: 117246, Russian Federation, Moscow, Nauchniy proezd, 18a.

We present our own data on the effectiveness of insecticidal bait based on the densovirus of the smoky-brown cockroach Periplaneta fuliginosa (PfDNV) for German, American and Oriental cockroaches. On average, the mortality rate of German cockroaches was 70 % within 5 days of the experiment, which corresponds to the required indicator of bait effectiveness. The total mortality of males and females of Oriental and American cockroaches was below 70 %, which does not allow us to recommend this product for use against these species of cockroaches. It has been established that male German cockroaches are more susceptible to bait than females. A comparison of the mortality rates of German cockroaches in the absence of alternative food showed that the MAG and KR strains resistant to traditional insecticides do not differ from that of the susceptible S-NIID strain. Females of the DM strain died off 3 times longer than susceptible S-NIID females. In the presence of alternative food, a slowdown in the action of the bait was observed in females of the KR strain by 2.5 times and in DM by 4 times. Viruses are highly specific to their hosts and can lead to a significant reduction in the number of hosts. Bioinsecticides may be a necessary alternative in the control of resistant German cockroaches.
Keywords: densovirus PfDNV, synanthropic cockroaches, resistance.

Mycoinsecticides for controlling the house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae)

K.S. Krivonos, O.Yu. Eremina, V.V. Olifer

Disinfectology Institute of the Center of Hygiene named after F.F. Erisman of Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing: 117246, Russian Federation, Moscow, Nauchniy proezd, 18a.

The review of foreign literature analyzes the effects of mycoinsecticides on the adults and larvae of the house fly. The time of death of 50 % of individuals at a high concentration of 1·109 conidia varies from 3.8 days for Beauveria bassiana and from 5.2 days for Metarhizium anisopliae. The time required to kill the host is usually 4–6 days for both species of fungi. Currently, more effective strains of fungi are developing in the world. Further increases in kill indices can be achieved by genetically modification of pathogen to accelerate its penetration through the cuticle. The susceptibility of house fly adults to sugar baits with B. bassiana conidia has been established. The reasons for differences in the effectiveness of B. bassiana against house fly larvae (from 0 % to 70 % mortality of larvae) are investigated, for example, variations in strain virulence, fungal cultivation method, conidial dose or concentration, fly instar, nutritional status of the host larvae, method of exposure, properties of the substrate for larval cultivation and differences in the susceptibility of fly cultures. Several mycoinsecticides assigned to control the house fly are produced abroad. Domestic developments are needed for use of entomopathogenic fungi against resistant flies in Russia.
Keywords: mycoinsecticides, entomopathogens, house fly, Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae.
